The role of the Board of Trustees is governance.

Best practice governance is not just about following the laws, rules and codes, it’s about adding value to an organisation. It is about leadership; it’s about direction; it’s about vision and strategic goals (what the organisation seeks to be and to achieve); it’s about ensuring the organisation is well managed, well prepared and on track to its vision and strategic goals. Best practice governance concentrates on the future, on strategy and performance whilst ensuring all fiduciary and compliance requirements are met.

Best practice boards continually stretch themselves and their organisations. Setting high standards and clear expectations around achievement, monitoring of progress towards targets, self review, accountability, professional development and adopting a climate of continuous improvement, are all marks of a highly effectively and elevating board.

Makarewa School Board of Trustees consists of five elected parent trustees, an elected staff trustee, and the Principal.

Board of Trustees meetings are advertised in the school newsletter and you are most welcome to attend. Minutes of meeting and curriculum reports are available at the school office.

Your current Board of Trustees are:

	Joanne O’Connor, Chairperson Elected Parent Trustee I have been proud to represent the Makarewa School community on the Board of Trustees since February 2006. Hayden and Anna are the third generation of our family to attend Makarewa School and my husband, Anthony, and I are thankful to have them benefiting from such dedicated teaching staff, supportive P.T.A. and wider school community. My vision is keep building on the successes, continually improve and grow our great school for our children now, as well as for the future. 	Sharon Harvey Elected Parent Trustee I have one child in Year 2. I joined the Makarewa Board of Trustees in April 2005 and have held the position of Treasurer since then.
	Kevin McNaught Elected Parent Trustee I have lived in Makarewa for over 20 years with my wife Nicky and our boys. I am employed as the Property Manager for the Southland District Council.
	Alister Blatch Elected Parent Trustee I am married to Rachelle and have two children, Emma, in Year 6 and Toby in Year 3. I joined the Board of Trustees in November 2006. I am a builder by trade.
	Lynley Thompson Co-opted Parent Trustee I was co-opted to the Board of Trustees in October 2009. My son, Alex, recently started at Makarewa School. I have a background in accountancy and am currently the Office Manager at Harcourts Real Estate.

We are looking for Trustees who are focused on supporting professional leadership, teaching and learning, and the ongoing improvement of student achievement.

Election date is 7 May 2010.

Information evenings will be arranged for prospective trustees and we also encourage you to come along to a trustee meeting to see how it works
