2011
Sporting

• Flippa Ball
  - Six Flippa Ball teams in Term 1 and four teams in Term 4.
  - Makarewa was second in the A grade section for Year 4-6 competition. Makarewa teams finished 4th in all other grades.
  
  
• Soccer
  One Soccer team in Term 1 and one in Term 4.
  
  
• Golf
  - Four golf teams participated in the Invercargill Primary School tournament.
  
  
• Touch
  - Five touch teams
  
  
• Netball
  - Three netball teams & two Fun Fern teams
  - Four children represented the Kiwi Zone at the Southland Primary School tournament.
  
  
• Hockey
  - Four hockey teams team.
  The Year 3-4 & Year 5-6 team was third in their respective competitions.
  
  
• Squash
  - Two students competed in the local schools competition finishing first and third
  
  
• Athletics
  -31 students represented the school at the Kiwi Zone Athletic Sports
  -16 students represented the Kiwi Zone at the Southland Athletic Championships in 31 events
  -2 students gained a top 3 placing in one event at Southland Championships
  -1 student gained top 3 placing in events at Southland Championships
  
  
• Cross Country
  - 24 students qualified for the Kiwi Zone Cross Country
  One student won their section at the Kiwi Zone Cross Country and three were placed third
  - Four students represented the Kiwi Zone at the Southland Cross Country Championships
  
  
• Table Tennis
  - Makarewa had one team compete in the local competition.
  
  
• Miniball
  - Four miniball teams played in the local competition.
  -The Year 5/6 Boys team won the round robin in their competition as well the overall competition.
  -The Year 3/4 team was third in their competition.

Cultural Highlights

• The school production of Sleeping Beauty.
• Creative Southland speech competition: One student reached Central Eastern Cluster final
• Kapa Haka performed at PolyFest and were winners of the Novice section at the Putangitangi competition.
• Oral Assessment: Four students gained Distinctions in the oral language exam
